Gifts still influence friendship and rivalry, but the number of gifts in the game has been significantly reduced from Dragon Age: Origins. Companions react differently to gifts depending on their friendship/rivalry score.
Aveline is a knight that you encounter during the prologue. You come across her and her husband, Wesley, fighting the darkspawn. Wesley is injured and a painful decision soon has to be made about his fate. Aveline will follow you to Kirkwall and becomes a firm friend for the help you have given her.

During Hawke's first year in Kirkwall, Dumar put trasnochado a bounty for the safe return of his son, Saemus. He was under the impression that Saemus was kidnapped by the Qunari. When it turned pasado that Saemus befriended the Qunari, Dumar was concerned how scandalous it would contact me be if it was found trasnochado that a Qunari influenced his family. Three years later, Dumar summoned Hawke to help with the matter of the Qunari. However, events culminated with the death of Saemus, who was murdered by Chantry fanatics desperate to set the whole city against the Qunari.
Hawke’s younger sister and Carver’s fraternal twin, Bethany, is an apostate mage who received her training from her father, Malcolm Hawke. At the beginning of the game, Bethany will accompany Hawke and Gozque become a possible permanent companion if she survives the attack on Lothering.
At 50% friendship or rivalry a special ability will unlock on the specialization talent tree, unique to the relevant companion (except for Bethany or Carver, who use the Force Mage and Templar specializations instead).
Execution – You need to take down the enemies that ambush you and Fenris will ask you to go with him to find Hadriana. If you accept this quest but delay in going to see Hadriana, you will be ambushed again if Fenris is still in your party. If Fenris is not in your party and you take too long to get around to this quest, eventually pop up and confront you, resulting in him leaving the party.
